The term roaming in wireless telecommunications is defined as the process of accessing voice, data and other cellular services whilst travelling outside the coverage area of the home network. This happens through means of ‘borrowing’ coverage from a network provider operating in the visited area.
If the visited network exists in the same country as the home network, this is referred to as national roaming. If the visited network exists in a separate country from the home network this is known as international roaming. And in the case whereby the visited network operates on a different technical standard than the home network e.g. CDMA and GSM, this is referred to as inter-standard roaming.
