NRTRDE or Near Real Time Roaming Data Exchange, is a GSMA initiative that aims to reduce the potential for worldwide roaming fraud. Its roll out is a direct response to the rapid growth in international travel which has led to an increase in mobile use outside home networks. NRTRDE aims to reduce the time taken to exchange CDRs between visited and home operators so that potential fraud can be identified quickly and controlled.
Why should I implement NRTRDE?
First and foremost, NRTRDE is a mandatory initiative from the GSMA. As a result, operators that are reluctant to implement NRTRDE will be susceptible to a number of disadvantages:
- Loss of revenue due to roaming fraud. Research carried out by the GSMA identified that one operator lost €11.1 million in 2 years due to fraud. NRTRDE is expected to reduce 90% of all revenue loss associated to roaming fraud. Also, any VPMN that is not NRTRDE compliant will be liable for any fraud that occurs.
- Loss of customer goodwill. Retaining your customer's confidence is a key business objective. Operators that are not NRTRDE compliant are more likely to be targeted by fraudsters which will systematically damage your protection to subscribers.
NRTRDE is a mandatory initiative from the GSMA and the compliancy date is fast approaching. Operators that are slow to introduce NRTRDE will be placing themselves in undue risk of fraud, and may potentially impair current and future roaming partnerships.
